Apple apps such as QuickTime Player, Photos, and Keynote work with many kinds of audio and video formats. Some apps prefer specific formats, but QuickTime movie files (.mov), most MPEG files (.mp4, .m4v, .m4a, .mp3, .mpg), some AVI and WAV files, and many other formats usually work in most apps without additional software.
Older or specialized media formats might not work in your app, because the format requires software designed to support it. If that happens, your app won't open the file or won't play back its audio or video.
How to search for an app that works with your file
As an all-inclusive free and open source media player, VLC media player enables you to play back media files of various types like video, audio, DVD and even Blu-ray on Windows, Mac, Linux, etc. It also offers other wonderful functions such as: trim and crop video, convert video within VLC, rotate video for special angle of view, etc. XviD codec for Mac OS 8/9 (3KB) The.sit file contains a QuickTime component, which delegates the playback of XviD videos to the DivX codec installed on your system. To install the XviD delegate component on Mac OS X, put the XVIDDelegate.component file in the /Library/QuickTime folder.
You might already have an app that supports the format of your file. If you don't know which of your installed apps to try, your Mac might be able to suggest one:
![Mac Mac](/uploads/1/3/4/7/134747701/267682376.png)
- Control-click (or right-click) the file in the Finder.
- From the shortcut menu that opens, choose Open With. You should see a submenu listing all of the other installed apps that your Mac thinks might be able to open the file.
If none of your installed apps can open the file, search the Internet or Mac App Store for apps that can play or convert the file:
- Include the name of the media format in your search. To find the format, select the file and press Command-I to open an Info window. The format might appear after the label Kind, such as ”Kind: Matroska Video File.”
- Include the filename extension in your search. The extension is the letters shown at the end of the file's name, such as .avi,.wmv, or .mkv.

Blu-ray has a huge storage space, and this is where the story begins. A single layer Blu-ray disc could store data up to 25GB, and a dual layer Blu-ray disc up to 50GB. It’s almost the double of HD DVD equivalent, which is the important reason why Blu-ray Disc defeated HD DVD in the war.

Blu-ray Codecs

A codec is a computer program for encoding and decoding media contents with or without quality loss. Blu-ray disc mainly uses these video codecs for the high definition data storage:
MPEG-2
This is a lossy video codec used in both HD DVD and early Blu-ray Disc. Although MPEG-2 could be used as a high definition codec, it’s not optimized for low bit rates (but high quality pictures). Therefore, many movie studios now switch to other video codecs for Blu-ray disc.

MPEG-4 AVC
It’s the informal name of H.264/MPEG-4 Part 10 or AVC (Advanced Video Coding). MPEG-4 AVC is the most widely used video codecs in Blu-ray discs. It supports 4096×2304 pixels in resolution and up to 26.7 Mbps for bit rate. This is the optimized video codec for Blu-ray, which delivers high quality picture even at the low bit rate than MPEG-1 in VCD.

Besides used in Blu-ray discs, MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) codec is also widely adopted to stream online videos, such as YouTube, Vimeo, and the iTunes Store.
SMPTE VC-1
VC-1 is initially developed as a proprietary video format by Microsoft, and is released as a formal SMPTE standard video format on April 3, 2006. SMPTE VC-1 is the best alternative to MPEG-4 AVC codec for Blu-ray disc. It supports the interlaced video sequences without converting to progressive first. And of course, VC-1 also supports progressive content encoding.
